St Clair Says Kickett Is Being Pushed Into Fight

Rising Western Australian prospect ‘Cool’ Willy Kickett takes a major step up in class when he faces former IBF/IBO junior lightweight world champion Gairy ‘Superman’ St Clair in the main support bout on the Jeff Fenech-Azumah Nelson 3 card on Tuesday night at the Vodafone Arena in Melbourne.33 year-old Australian based St Clair 40-6-2 (17) from Guyana, feels that Kickett is being pushed into this fight too early by his trainer Craig Christian. “Honestly, I’m not sure the kid wants the fight,” he said. “Craig Christian is the type of trainer and manager who is pushing for the fight. This fight is not about William Kickett. It is all about Craig Christian.”St Clair pointed to Christian trained boxers Daniel Dawson, Naoufel Ben Rabah and Andreas Seran, who had all stepped up for big fights over the last eighteen months, only to lose.“Craig Christian is his own worst enemy when it comes to training and managing fighters,” said St Clair. “All of those guys he pushed up into big fights, they lost. He is always making the wrong choices. William Kickett is a good young kid, but he has only had ten fights and hasn’t fought anyone on my level. He looks very good against average opponents.”21 year-old Kickett 10-0 (5) is very pleased to get the chance to beat St Clair so early in his career.“I can’t wait to fight Gairy,” he said. “I’m in great condition and I love a challenge. I want to fight better fighters every fight, I’m not scared to take on a challenge, and I like to test myself.”

While he lost to rising superstar Amir Khan in the UK at lightweight on February 2, St Clair says people shouldn’t make the mistake of writing off his career just yet. “Amir Khan is a good young fighter,” admitted St Clair. “I take nothing away from him. But that wasn’t my weight class. I am back in my best weight class and the fans will see that on Tuesday night.” Full Tuesday Night CardJeff Fenech vs. Azumah Nelson, 10 roundsWilliam Kickett vs. Gairy St Clair, 10 roundsOmari Kimweri vs. Angky Angkota, 12 roundsShannon McMahon vs. Mick Shaw, 8 roundsSamuel Colomban vs. Kofi Manu, 6 roundsJustin Bayley vs. Justin Whitehead, 4 roundsBen Costello vs. Robert Sanders, 4 roundsDubbed the rematch of the century by the promoter, “The Final Round” headlined by Fenech vs. Nelson 3, takes place from 6:30pm on 24 June 2008 at Vodafone Arena Melbourne.Ticket prices range from $50-$200 and can be purchased from www.Ticketek.com.au or 132 849Fenech vs. Nelson 3 is also available throughout Australia on pay-per-view via Main Event Television
